Bed Bugs

May 18, 2018

Bed Bugs have been common throughout U.S. history and recently the United States has endured a resurgence in bed bug population.

Although not known to transmit any human illness, they do pose a threat of potentially itchy or painful bite reactions.

Bed bug bites look like little red bumps and sometimes resemble mosquito bites, but some people experience localized allergic reactions that can lead to infection if scratched. Bed bugs are very small, flat insects that feed on the blood of sleeping people and animals.

They are reddish-brown in color, wingless, and range from 1 to 7 millimeters in length. Beg bugs They during the day in places such as seams of mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards, dresser tables, cracks or crevices, behind wallpaper, and under any clutter or objects around a bed.

If you find the signs of bed bugs in your home, then you need the services of a trained pest control professional to rid your home of these proliferate pests. Call Currys and schedule an appointment today.

Crickets

May 18, 2018

Crickets are seen in a variety of species in central Arkansas. House crickets measure between 3/4 and 7/8-inch long and are light, yellowish-brown in colorand exhibit three dark bands atop their heads.

Ground crickets are brown and much smaller than other common cricket species. Field crickets are brown or black in color and can grow to measure more than one inch in length.

Crickets are a common food source for other animals, including rodents, lizards and spiders so having them may mean you’re inviting other pests in or around your home. When mating, male crickets create sound by rubbing their forewings against each other. These sounds can prove troublesome at night, when they are often loud enough to interrupt sleep. If you’ve got crickets keeping you up, then call Currys and we’ll help bring back the silence.

Ticks

May 18, 2018

Ticks are common in central Arkansas and we deal with several species that are capable of spreading a variety of diseases. The most common tick we come incontact with are The American Dog tick, the Blacklegged tick (Deer tick), the Brown Dog tick and the Lone Star tick.
In their final stage of adulthood, tick will feed on a just about any animal, generally medium to large animals, including humans. They’re usually found in woody or bushy areas or in tall grass. Ticks will wait on the ends of leaves for a host to come by and brush them off onto their body or clothes.

Ticks do not naturally carry disease however if the tick feeds on an infected animal it will carry the disease and transmit it to its next host. The tick will get it from the blood and transmit it through its saliva when it bites its host. The most common diseases transmitted by ticks are Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis and Tularemia.

Wasps, Hornets, Yellowjackets and Bees

May 18, 2018

Wasps, Hornets, Yellowjackets and Bees are beneficial insects, although they are generally considered to be pests because of their ability to sting. Wasps, inparticular, can become a problem in autumn when they may disrupt many outdoor activities or invade living spaces such as carports, garages or attic areas.

In Arkansas we most commonly see Honey Bees, Bumble Bees, Yellowjackets, Baldface Hornets and the Paper Wasps. It is important to distinguish between these insects because different methods may be necessary to control them if they become a nuisance. Yellowjackets, baldfaced hornets, and paper wasps make nests from a papery pulp comprised of chewed-up wood fibers mixed with saliva and usually nest in quiet or infrequently used areas. Honey Bees usually make their honey comb colonies cavities in large trees, voids in building walls, or other protected areas.

Wasp pest problemBumblebees use old mice burrows, cavities in buildings, and other locations to make their nests. Although painful, none of these insect stings are considered life threatening in small numbers. Very rarely is the case that a person suffers from allergy to their venom in which case anaphylactic shock may set in minutes after being stung. If you come across any nesting sites in or around your home, stay away and call Currys for safe removal.

Rats

May 18, 2018

Rats, and more distinctly Norway Rats, are very common in Arkansas. Inhabiting a very large region of North America, these scavengers live in very close association with people. In urban or suburban areas they live in and around residences, in cellars, warehouses, stores, slaughterhouses, docks and in sewers.

They may burrow to make nests under buildings and other structures, beneath concrete slabs, in garbage dumps and at other locations where suitable food, water and shelter are present. This makes them a very persistant threat.

Adult Norway rats weigh an average of one pound. Their fur is coarse and usually brownish or reddish-gray above and whitish gray on the belly. Rats use their keen sense of smell to locate food items and to recognize other rats.

Rats cause structural damage to buildings by burrowing and gnawing and can undermine building foundations and slabs. Rats also may gnaw on electrical wires or water pipes and further damage structures further by gnawing openings through doors, window sills, walls, ceilings, and floors. Considerable damage to insulated structures can occur as a result of rat burrowing and nesting in walls and attics.

Rats have been known to transmit murine typhus, leptospirosis, trichinosis, salmonellosis (food poisoning), and ratbite fever to humans and other animals. Telltale signs of rat activity are droppings found along runways or in feeding areas, smudge marks (rub marks) on walls, floors or baseborad as a result of oil and dirt rubbing off rats’ fur along frequently traveled routes, and gnawing marks visible on doors, ledges, in corners, in wall material, on stored materials, or other surfaces.

If you see signs of rat activity, give Curry’s a call today and we’ll enact a rat pest control plan immediately.

Mice

May 18, 2018

Mice are one of the most troublesome and economically harmful rodents found in Arkansas. Mice frequently find their way into homes in
the autumn when outdoor temperatures at night become colder. Mice can squeeze through openings as small as a 1/4 inch across. Mice have poor eyesight but a highly developed sense of smell. Unsecured foor stores and pet food is an often cause of mouse inhabitance.
Most house mice are brown in color and feature long, hairless tails and are also extremely intelligent. It’s often difficult to outsmart a resourceful and hungry mouse who’s made itself comfortable. When you see one, it usually means that there are many more you don’t see.

Curry’s pest extermination services provide effective mouse control by helping to identify and eliminate food sources, properly seal points of entry, and exterminate any current infestation if necessary.

Subterranean Termites

May 18, 2018

Subterranean Termites are common in Arkansas and part of the family Rhinotermitidae. In most cases, these termites require contact with the soil, whichprovides optimal temperatures and moisture for their survival.
Often confused with ants, Subterranean termites use mud tubes to connect their underground nests to above ground food sources. The wide spread distribution of this pest leads experts to believe that it causes more physical damage to homes nationwide than any other termite species.

termite swarm problemThe presence of mud tubes on home surfaces near the ground and large swarms of flying termites and are the two most noticeable signs of subterranean termite infestations. Because of their small size and the hard to access areas of active areas, these signs can be difficult to observe.

Annual termite inspections focusing on termite entry points and signs of activity are crucial to prevent costly damage.

The most common control measures for subterranean termite infestations include placing bait stations around the home and treating infested areas (direct applications to the soil and damaged wood) with termiticides. Its also important to focus on reducing moisture sources and wood-to-ground contact. By limiting entry points and water sources, you can help make it less likely termites will make your home less hospitable to these wood hungry pests.

Spiders

May 18, 2018

Spiders, as a species, are predators and are poisonous, but very few pose any danger to humans. As predators, spiders are beneficial as they feed on a widevariety of insects that we also consider to be pests.

Only a few species of spiders have the ability to bite and harm people. The other types of spiders are either too small to bite or their poison is too weak to harm humans.

Of the few dangerous species found in Arkansas, the Black Widow and the Brown Recluse can cause serious medical problems and possible death under certain circumstances.

If you have unwanted spider guests in your home, it is best to get a Curry’s pest control professional to identify them and provide a plan of action to evict them.

Fleas

May 18, 2018

Fleas are biting insects and the only stage of flea that feeds on blood. They may be found on pets throughout the year, but numberstend to increase dramatically during spring and summer.

Once fleas infest a home, control will require a vigilant program that includes cleaning and treating infested areas indoors, eliminating fleas on pets, and cleaning up and/or treating shaded outdoor locations in warmer months. Call our Curry’s pest control service specialists to protect your family from fleabites and infestation!

German Cockroaches

May 18, 2018

German Cockroaches very commonly found in homes in central Arkansas and are the most widespread of all cockroaches in the United States.

They are brownto dark brown in color and have two distinct parallel bands running the length of their pronotum, or area before the wings.

German roach adults are approximately ½-inch in length and complete their lifecycle in approximately 100 days, and they breed continuously (with many overlapping generations present at any one time). Under ideal conditions, it has been estimated that one female German roach can be the cause of a population explosion of over 1 million. German roaches are commonly found in and around apartments, homes, supermarkets, restaurants, and similar commercial facilities. They prefer areas near food, moisture, and warmth.

German roaches often litter food or food products with their feces and defensive secretions. They also physically transport and often harbor pathogenic organisms, and in some cases may cause severe allergic reactions.

This cockroach is also smaller than many other species so it can more easily hide and fit into very small cracks and crevices to evade humans. That is also the main reason they can most effectively be controlled with baits in cracks and crevices near harborages. These types of pest control methods should kill 95% of the overall population in a property due to their fast reproductive cycles.
